The scan provides your GP and Consultant Cardiologist with timely information about the structure and basic function of your heart. This helps them decide the most appropriate next steps in your care.

Why Have I Been Referred?
This service provides an initial, focused assessment of the heart for people who may be developing or at risk of developing heart disease. The scan gives your GP and supervising cardiologist helpful information about your heart and can help support earlier diagnosis and management of heart conditions. In many cases the results are reassuring, but sometimes further assessment or testing may be recommended.
What Happens During The Scan?
Guiding you through each stage of the scan process. This overview outlines what you can expect during your appointment.
The scan is carried out in a primary care or community clinic by a registered healthcare professional.
You will be asked to lie on a couch and remove clothing from your upper body. A gown or blanket will be provided for comfort.
A small amount of gel is placed on your chest, and a handheld probe is gently moved over the area to create moving images of your heart.
The scan is painless and does not use radiation. You may feel slight pressure from the probe as images are taken. You may also be asked to take a deep breath or briefly hold your breath to improve image quality.
Most appointments last a maximum of about 30 minutes and you can go home straight afterwards.
How Should I Prepare?
Take your usual medications unless told otherwise by your doctor.
You do not need to fast.
If you feel unwell on the day of your appointment, contact the clinic to reschedule.
Understanding Your Results
The images from your scan are reviewed by a Consultant Cardiologist.
A written report is sent to your GP or referring doctor.
Your GP or referring doctor will discuss the results and any next steps with you.
In some cases, the cardiology team may contact you directly if the scan shows something that requires further tests or a cardiology clinic appointment.
